DIY Pheasant Feather and Plants Mobile

Jun 29th 2017

Looking for a fun summer craft to make? Whether or not you have kids, this DIY mobile is a relaxing project to make that results in a gorgeous home, party, or kid’s room* decoration! You can use artificial greenery and flowers, or go on a walk in nature and find some real ones to use. Pair those with some beautiful pheasant feathers and a couple more supplies and you are ready to go!

Supplies needed:

-A few kinds of different natural or artificial leaves

-A few kinds of natural or artificial flowers

-Baker’s twine (or another kind of thin string)

-Large embroidery hoop

-Scissors

-Medium sized sewing or upholstery needle

-Hole punch

-Natural Ringneck Pheasant Wing Round Quill Feathers 4-6” size

Step 1:

Gather your leaves, flowers, and feathers! Decide what order you would like to hang them in, keeping in mind the mobile is circular. If your leaves or flowers are in clusters or large pieces, cut them into individual pieces of one, two, or three. You don’t want them to be too heavy when they are hung up!

Step 2:

Begin cutting different sized lengths of string so that when your nature pieces are hung up, they will be staggered in height! Cut the string anywhere between 3-8” inches in length, making sure there is enough extra length so that you can attach it to the embroidery hoop.

Step 3:

Tie the nature pieces to the string tightly! If the leaves or flowers do not have thick enough stems, wrap the twine around extra tight or use the hole punch or sewing needle to securely attach them to the string. If the string keeps sliding off the feathers, thread the twine into the sewing needle and push the needle through the quill tip to attach it!

Step 4:

Take the inner part of the embroidery hoop (the one without the metal fastener on it) and begin tying the nature pieces onto the hoop, again, at staggering heights. Make sure they are all hanging down the same way and tightly fastened onto the hoop. Trim any excess string from tying.

Step 5:

Cut 3 or 4 more lengths of string all in the same size, based on your preference. If you are going to hang your mobile from a higher ceiling, cut a longer length of up to a few feet! If you will hang your mobile from a shorter distance, cut lengths between 10-20”. Tie these to the embroidery hoop equal distance from each other and gather the other ends of the string together at the top. Adjust the strings as needed until the hoop hangs level and even, and tie them together in a few knots, with a final one making a loop! Cut any excess length and you are ready to hang your mobile!
