Natural Feather Garland Tutorial

Jun 29th 2017

This is a fun project that will give you a simple, natural décor piece that is great for your home or your next party or event!

Supplies you’ll need:

-Scissors

-Medium sized sewing or upholstery needle (the eye must be large enough to fit the string)

-A few feet of skinny string (however long you want your garland to be)

-Tape or thumb tacks

-Natural Barred Rock Hen Wing Quill Feathers

-White Goose Satinettes

-Natural Polka Dot Guinea Fowl Wing Quill Feathers

Step 1:

Prepare your feathers! We used three different kinds but feel free to use one or two based on your own preference! Once you know how many kinds you would like, decide how you would like to arrange your feathers. You could alternate every other feather for a neater look, or change types randomly every few feathers for a more pieced together feel. Figure out what works for you and lay all of the feathers out in the order you plan to string them in. Trim the quill tips of the feathers so they are between a ½ and a ¼ inch in length.

Step 2:

Take your needle and thread it onto one end of the string. Begin pushing the needle through the quill tip of the first feather; making sure that it is face up. Slide the threaded feather down to the other end of the string but be sure to leave a few inches of length at the end of the string so that you can still hang the garland up.

Step 3:

Repeat with the rest of the feathers, making sure that when you thread them they are all facing the same way and are evenly dispersed along the string. Keep threading until you have filled the string up!

Step 4:

Lay your garland out and rearrange any feathers that are too close together or too far apart. If you want it to look fuller, push them closer together and string more feathers on! If you want it to look more spread apart you can remove some feathers as well.

Step 5:

Once your garland is to your liking, tie a double or triple knot at each end of the string to ensure the feathers will not slide off! Use tape or thumbtacks to hang up your garland indoors or outdoors! When you are not using it, simply fold and stack the feathers together and store them a container where they will not be crushed or dented. You are finished!
