Spotlight: Ostrich Feathers!

This week we’re highlighting ostrich feathers! With so many kinds and so many uses, ostrich feathers are super versatile and perfect for crafting, party and wedding décor, floral arrangements, and so much more. We’ll give you an overview of the different kinds we have available and give you some ideas to inspire you for your next projects.
Ostrich Plumes:
These are some of the largest ostrich feathers that we have, although they do come in different sizes ranging from 14-35 inches! They are wide in shape and very wispy and soft, with an elegant feel. These are the highest quality that you won’t find in craft stores and they make for the most stunning centerpieces; with quills about the size of a pencil, they are very sturdy feathers and the perfect addition to parties, special events, and weddings. Making your own ostrich feather centerpiece is easier than you think and these feathers are sure to wow! They are also commonly used in floral arrangements, home décor, carnival costumes, and vintage inspired headbands.

Ostrich Drabs:
These ostrich feathers are very similar to the plume feathers, the main differences being in size and length of the fiber. Drabs come in smaller sizes in addition to larger ones, ranging from 6-24 inches. The fiber feather hairs on these ones are not as long as the plumes, but nonetheless these feathers are beautiful and can be used the same way plumes are. They are great for smaller projects where you need something more lightweight than ostrich plumes, as the quill is not quite as thick, and they can still be used to create that classic centerpiece look for events. Ostrich Tail Feathers:
These feathers have a long quill and less fiber compared to drabs. They are between 12-16 inches long and are a cost-effective alternative to drabs and plumes for centerpieces, costuming, and anything else you would use drabs or plumes for! They too come in a lot of different colors.

Ostrich Spads:
These feathers still have the wispy, soft look of ostrich feathers but instead of being as wide as the feathers we listed above, they have a trimmed look and come to a tapered point at the top of the feather. These have colorful options and are also great to use for centerpieces, floral, costuming, and special events. They come in two sizes, which are mini spads ranging in size from 12-18 inches and regular spads which are 20-28 inches.

Ostrich Nandu:
Nandu feathers are similar to spads because they have that trimmed and tapered look, except they are long and skinnier looking. These are great when you want a slim feather, especially for floral and party arrangements. They are hand trimmed to get their shape and are easy to work with, ranging in size from 18-26 inches! Once again, they come in lots of colors and have uses in costuming, Mardi Gras, and special events.
Ostrich Confetti Feathers:
These are small, fluffy feathers that resemble tiny ostrich drabs! Their length is from 3-5 inches and they are commonly used as confetti for weddings and performances, as their name suggests. They are very wispy and soft, also working well for making headbands or hair pieces, costumes for Halloween or Carnival, and they make great party decorations.

Ostrich Fringe Trim:
This is made from stripping the fiber barbules from drabs and plumes and stitching it onto a ribbon to form trim; so you get that extra soft fluffy feel in many colors for all your sewing and craft needs! Fringe trim is great for costuming, clothing design, adding accents to floral arrangements, and so much more. It’s easy to work with and we have it in either 6 inch strips, or by the yard!
