Sweet & Simple Dreamcatcher

Apr 12th 2017

In Native American tradition, a dreamcatcher is hung the place you sleep to catch bad dreams and let good ones through! They are intricate and very beautiful, adding a lovely touch wherever they are hung. They are easier to make than you think, and this week we’re giving you guys a simple way to create your own!

Supplies you’ll need:

-Bamboo or wood embroidery hoop (we used a 6” size)

-Thick white yarn

-White hemp chord or string

-Several wooden beads

-White T-base Turkey Plumage Feathers

-Scissors

-Hot glue

-Glue gun

Step 1:

Cut a length of white yarn that is around 30 inches long. Tie one end tightly onto the embroidery hoop and begin wrapping it around and through the hoop until all of the wood is covered with the yarn. Cut the yarn and tie it off so it stays in place.

Step 2:

Take the white hemp chord or string and tie it tightly onto the hoop where you would like the top of the dreamcatcher to be. Measuring a pinky’s length from where the string is tied, take the rest of the string and cross it over the top of the hoop and around the back to the left, pulling it back over to the top. Repeat all the way around; you should have a small loop connecting the string onto the hoop each time.

Step 3:

You are now going to repeat the loops you just made but instead of wrapping them onto the hoop, you are going to wrap them onto the string that connects each loop attached to the hoop. So starting at the first gap between loops, string the chord behind and over the line of string, bringing it over and to the left, crossing it over the string to then start the next one. Repeat this, pulling the loops tight as you go, until you can no longer make loops! Tie the string off with several knots and trim the excess string off the end.

Step 4:

Measure and cut 6 lengths of yarn that are each 24 inches long. Fold each piece of yarn in half and take the looped end of each one and pull it around the back and over the bottom of the embroidery hoop. Pull the ends of the yarn through the looped end and pull it until it is tightly secured to the hoop. Repeat with each piece until the bottom is evenly covered with yarn hanging down. Trim the strings on the outer edges so they have a nice tapered look.

Step 5:

On the end of every other string, slide one wooden bead. Then add a few drops of hot glue to one end, placing the quill tip of a white t-base turkey feather onto the end and letting it dry. Slide the bead over the glue to cover it. Repeat with all 6 pieces of yarn until all the feathers are attached. You are done!
